CFD simulations

Computer simulations using Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) allow predictions of heat and smoke movement in complex geometries affected by fire.

CFD simulations are an advanced engineering tool, suitable for design problems which cannot be solved with prescriptive approach or simplified empirical formulas.

In fire engineering CFD simulations are used to:

  • Predict conditions for evacuation during a fire (mainly visibility and temperature)
  • Verify correctness of smoke control strategy adopted at the design stage
  • Predict thermal conditions within the fire compartment – for the purpose of structural fire engineering calculations.

CFD simulations can be applied as a design tool for large and complex buildings and structures such as:

  • Shopping centres
  • Underground car parks with ducted and jet-fan smoke ventilation systems
  • Atrium buildings
  • Transportation infrastructure including tunnels
  • Industrial facilities

Our staff have the knowledge and experience necessary for appropriate use of CFD modelling. We carry out simulations using Fire Dynamics Simulator (FDS) – a CFD code developed by NIST specifically for fire-related applications.
